Canada joined NATO in 1949.
The period 1950-1955 saw 12 Canadian infantry battalions serving in Korea, most of them with the 25th Canadian Infantry Brigade as part of the First Commonwealth Division.
From 1956-87, the service arms were FNC1A1, C1SMG(Sterling), FNC2 (squad automatic weapon, a heavier barreled FN) GPMG, M72 Anti-tank rocket, Carl Gustav 84mm anti-tank gun, 106mm recoiless rifle. 60mm mortar
From 1988-present, the service rifle has been the C7 a Canadian version of the M16A2. C9 Minimi squad automatic weapon, GPMG, Carl Gustav.
The basic uniform of a Canadian Forces member at this time was combat dress, an olive green suit of combat trouser, combat shirt and either a bush hat or beret. The M1 helmet was the protective gear.
